QT Hotel - Sydney
A brand new hotel has opened in Sydney this week - the QT, on the landmark site containing the historic State Theatre and much-loved Gowings building,
on the corner of Market and George Streets in the city. Looks amazing!
Article from ArchitectureAU:
Outwardly the
two buildings remain distinct, with the Market Street level offering the
public a taste of QT hospitality with restaurants, cafés and bars
leading into the hotel above Parlour Lane Roasters opens early as a coffee and breakfast spot,
later switching to aperitivo wine bar. Its heritage-tiled floors are
restored and original ornate shop display cabinets reinstated to house
artefacts from the site alongside covetable design objects. Upstairs is
the Gowings Bar & Grill where food director Robert Marchetti and QT
Sydney executive chef Paul Easson (ex Melbourne Rockpool) present a
European brasserie menu with a seafood accent for the Sydney palate.
Upstairs again is the Gilt Lounge for a quiet after-dinner drink or
cocktail till late.
Public areas and their styling are the work of architect Nic Graham’s
team, while the hotel’s 200 guest rooms were done by Shelley Indyk
(Indyk Architects). In deference to the vintage of these stunning
buildings, the two design teams have gone for old-world allure with an
eclectic edge, incorporating both conserved artefacts and newly
commissioned art. Curator of the public area artwork Amanda Love brings
together Adelaide artist and maker Richard Blackwell and Sydney sculptor
Morgan Shimeld, whose work will feature in the guest rooms.
A lot of restoration and interpretive design work has gone into
merging these two significant buildings. Heritage consultant Jonathan
Bryant from Graham Brooks and Associates worked closely with the project
architects Woodhead, and interiors consultants Indyk Architects and Nic Graham + Associates. Bryant describes the resulting pastiche as
“spectacular.” A lot will be written about this project in the coming
months, both from the perspective of interior design and
heritage restoration.

Iron beds
When I started looking for a big bed for Isobel a few years ago, I found it really hard to get what I wanted (a cast iron vintage or vintage-look bed) without a ridiculous price tag. I was lucky enough to find a genuine vintage one on Ebay - which I still absolutely adore, it was well worth the trouble to travel to pick it up. You can see it in her room here.
If I'd seen these lovelies from Incy Interiors at the time, no doubt I would have been tempted. And they are a reasonable price. Loving the colours too. Gorgeous!

Orla Kiely + Method
I am officially obsessed with Orla Kiely. I also love Method. So you can only imagine my excitement when I came across this collaboration today! Followed by massive disappointment of course, because these lovely items aren't available to us in lonely little Australia :(
“We love Method’s fun and eco-friendly approach in designing their cleaning products so it’s been wonderful to bring our bright, colorful prints onto the bottles to complement these lovely new fragrances”Orla’s graphic prints adorn her ready-to-wear clothing collections, house wares, furnishings, perfume and accessories. Method designers worked with Orla to select four bright and fun prints that would complement Method’s iconic bottle designs and inspire four unique fragrances – pear ginger, vanilla chai, bay leaf and primrose.
“Working with Orla and her team was a natural fit given the mutual love of color, patterns and design shared by both our brands,” said Sally Clarke, creative director of Method.
Method used Orla’s patterns as the starting point for the fragrance development with this collection. The coral-colored floral print inspired a primrose fragrance – an updated twist on a classic rose – while an herbaceous, rich bay leaf brings the iconic green stem print to life. The pear pattern inspired a fresh fragrance with a hint of ginger to create a bright, clean aroma that carries across hand wash to cleaning spray and dish soap.
“We love Method’s fun and eco-friendly approach in designing their cleaning products so it’s been wonderful to bring our bright, colorful prints onto the bottles to complement these lovely new fragrances,” said Orla Kiely.
Available this fall at Target stores nationwide and on methodhome.com, the Method + Orla Kiely designer collaboration includes gel and foaming hand wash, dish soap and all-purpose cleaning spray ($2.99 - $3.99). The biodegradable and naturally derived formulas are free of any dirty ingredients, like parabens, phthalates, triclosan and EDTA. And packaged in recyclable bottles made with 100% recycled plastic (PCR).
